Current employment: I am the Research Manager of the Schools Health Education Unit (SHEU), where I have worked full-time since 1989. The SHEU is an independent research group based in Exeter that is best known for its survey work, and which for many years was part of the University of Exeter.

I have the lead for IT in the Unit, taking responsibility for maintaining our suite of commercial and self-written software and I manage the stock of networked computers. I take the lead in the writing of academic papers, local survey reports, articles and other material, and I maintain the Unit's website (www.sheu.org.uk). I have been involved in a number of aspects of the management of the Unit, and have the lead for personnel issues and for innovation.

Part of my time in the Unit involves liaison with health and education professionals, an aspect of the work in which I thrive. My initial attraction to teaching remains, and I have been involved in lecturing, supervisory and seminar work both in the School of Education and the Post-Graduate Medical School. I have often given public presentations of our work to groups of teachers, school governors and parents.

My own research interests include psychometric and action research and the developmental psychology of young people's social groups. I am a member of the Institute for Health Promotion and Education and several other professional bodies concerned with Personal, Social and Health Education.

Previous employment: I was a teacher and lecturer from 1984-1986, teaching mostly Biology to 'O' and 'A'-level in state schools and colleges in Hampshire, London and Cambridge. An interest in health education led me to take up a studentship at Exeter University (1986-89), during which time I worked part-time as a Lecturer in Psychology at Exeter College, and as a researcher for the Exeter Coronary Prevention in Children Group.

I later helped convene a support group for the fixed-term contract Researchers in the School of Education. I have sat on the Research Committee of the School of Education and the University Computer Users' Group.

Education: After a school career marked with examination success (1972-79), I took a First in Natural Sciences for my undergraduate degree at Cambridge (1979-82), during which time I was awarded ten University and College awards for achievement. I then took a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at Cambridge (1982-83), which I passed with distinction (DfEE ref. no.: 82/61371). After a period in teaching, I returned to study at the University of Exeter, where I was awarded a Ph.D in Education for my thesis Self-concept and conformity in theories of health education.
Other posts and interests: For 10 years I was a Governor of a local primary school and currently am Chair of the Management Committee of the Hospital Education Centre.

I have a keen interest in chess and play for Exeter and Devon. I have constructed a chess coaching website that has gained an international reputation for excellence (exetercc.technocool.net -- "probably the best chess-related coaching page on the Internet" - London Chess Centre).

I was a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society from 1981-1990 and I maintain a keen interest in natural history. I like to draw cartoons, which have been used in my junior chess book and in a variety of publications connected with work.

I enjoy gardening, Aikido and listening to jazz.

I hold a clean driving licence.
